In an onstage interview at the Texas Tribune Festival on Saturday, September 24, Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton raised concerns about the feasibility and soundness of the campaign promises made by fellow Democrat Sally Hernandez, a constable deemed most likely to win Hamilton’s position come November.
Hamilton was featured along with Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez on the panel discussion titled “Immigration and the Cities” at the Texas Tribune Festival. Hernandez, who is running against her Republican counterpart, Joe Martinez, favors making Austin a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants and believes you can’t “solve the criminal justice process by deporting them.”
According to the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the majority of local law enforcement agencies limiting cooperation with the federal government when it comes to handling local immigrants are in California.
