Texas State Senator Charles Lee Perry (Republican of West Texas District 28) wants to do away with “sanctuary cities,” or locations where police are lenient about pursuing illegal immigrants, FOX 7 News reported on March 16.
A Senate State committee conducted a hearing on Perry’s bill. This is a week after committee Democrats delayed the discussion because the public had not had time to learn of the bill.
Similar bills were declared a priority in 2011 by former Texas Governor Rick Perry. Such bills contain provisions that would force police departments to remain strict on immigration.
The proposals, however, were never before approved in the state. It remains to be seen how far the controversial bill will get this time.
