After taking a more lenient stance on immigration matters two years ago, the Texas Republican Party has returned to a hard-line policy against softening immigration standards.
Candidate for Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick said “we must not step back from being bold,” a commitment he and other party members swore on at their recent party convention that concluded last Saturday, June 7.
On the other hand, Democratic Party members, who have not won a state-wide post in Texas in over 20 years, say this reluctance on the part of Republicans to favor a softer stance on immigration issues will greatly benefit Democrats, largely because of the state’s growing Hispanic population.
