Austin, Texas’s initiative – the Asian American Quality of Life Initiative – which copies similar efforts for the city’s African-Americans and Hispanics, is still in its preliminary stages, but city officials and non-profit organizations have been saying that some of the challenges facing members of Asian communities are in the process of being addressed.
According to city demographer Ryan Robinson, Asians who immigrated to Austin increased to 6.5% of the population from 3.3% of the population between the years 1990 and 2012. Robinson noted that the number of Asians living in Austin may exceed the African-American population in the years to come.
Asian American Cultural Resource Center executive director Esther Chung Martin said the Asian community in Austin, comprised of individuals from two dozen nations from Mongolia to Pakistan including Filipinos, Taiwanese, Thais, Afghans, and refugees from Myanmar, Bhutan, and Nepal, is “a huge spectrum of languages, religions, and cultures.”
