A number of leaders in Austin, Texas are pushing for the city to issue their own identification cards to provide fair opportunities to people in the area, regardless of their immigration status.
Austin is known for being an immigrant-friendly city, and took great pains last year along with 14 other cities to announce its cause, according to Immigration Rights Coalition member Nora De La Rosa.
The Austin City Council met at the Travis County Commissioners Court on Thursday, August 7 in the hopes of getting the city manager to put the option of instituting the IDs on the table. These cards would make it much easier for individuals to secure health care, visit their children in school, and participate in a number of other important services.
