Although Texas is one of the most vocal among the states objecting to President Obama’s executive measure to delay the deportation of some undocumented immigrants in the United States, not all of the state’s leaders agree with former state attorney general, now Governor, Greg Abbott’s lawsuit. In fact, two officials, Austin Mayor Steve Adler and Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt, have spoken out against the state’s attempts to fight the President’s plan.
Twenty-six states, including Texas, filed a lawsuit last December to block the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents program, also called DAPA, a measure which would allow certain immigrants who have lived in the U.S. since 2010 and are parents of legal citizens to be exempt from deportation for a temporary period.
In a rally held on Saturday, October 13, Adler urged Texas Governor Gregory Wayne Abbott to meet with immigrant families in the community so that he could understand their plight.
