Categories of Student Visas
Before studying in the United States as a foreign student, you will likely need to first successfully apply for a student visa. However, there are three categories of student visas, each of which is applicable for certain academic programs and institutions. With that in mind, prospective students should extensively research which schools they may attend under each category of student visa.
Three Types of Student Visas
Before even applying for a student visa, foreign students wishing to study in the United States must first be accepted by a school or institution that is certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). As they currently stand, there are the following three categories of student visas in the United States:
- J-1: For students involved in an Exchange Visitor Program
- F-1: For students attending an SEVP-certified public high school, K-12 private school, academic post-secondary school, or English language school
- M-1: For students attending a SEVP-certified vocational or technical school
The process of obtaining a student visa can be highly complicated for anyone unfamiliar with the visa application process; we can help ensure that your application is both complete and filed by its deadline.
